Michael Schatz studied Art History and Communications at the Philipps University, Marburg and Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz in Germany. He undertook specialized studies in Latin American Art at the University of Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. He received his Masters in Art History with a study on the wall paintings in the 'Casa del Fundador Gonzalo Suárez Rendón' in Tunja, Colombia.

 

Since 1996 he has been working as an independent art historian with a focus on Latin American art, German travel artists and the German porcelain. He has presented papers for numerous international congresses and published in academic publications.

 

Alongside his art historical work he is active as a journalist and producer making short and long reports and documentaries on archeology, vulcanology, science, culture and current affairs. He has gained a reputation as a detailed investigator and a lively storyteller who mixes hard fact with on the road experience.

 

Since 1994 he has been writing for the Encyclopedia of World Artists (Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon) as a specialist on Colombian artists. In 2012 he wrote a monograph Ivo Schaible: Kolumbiansiches Zeichenbuch published by Schahl Kunstverlag which was extended and updated in a Spanish edition Ivo Schaible: Dibujos de Colombia in 2015.
